When it is time to choose which one of the slot car tracks you want to take home, you have one main consideration and that is space. If you want eight cars to race around your slot car tracks, you are going to need a space of about 14 feet by 8 feet and this is just not possible for most people.
If space is an option at home, then you might want to look into digital slot car tracks. Unlike the analog kind, you can have eight cars racing on just two tracks. You can actually switch lanes to overtake your competition. This makes for a much more realistic racing situation. The slot car community is divided over the digital racing revolution. Some love it, while others are die-hard analog fans.
If you have the space and want to go analog, you need to consider the size of the cars you will be racing around your slot car tracks. The standard size of car is 1:32 and this handle great on all types of track both for 1:32 and 1:24 sized cars. But if you want to race the larger 1:24 slot cars at home, you are going to need to race on a Carrera track. It is the only track that is wide enough to race the larger 1:24 slot cars at home.
If the slot car tracks are for younger children or if you have pets that might potentially chew on the track, you will want to go for a softer plastic rather than the more brittle plastics that are used in the Carrera tracks. The softer slot car tracks are great if you are going to be setting it up on the floor and the flexibility allows you build hills on your track too. If you want to get into more serious racing and will mount your track on a table, then you should go for the Carrera.
