Welcome to MagnetMarshal.com. We are just as obsessed with slot cars as you are! Things have come a long way since the first slot cars of the 30's. Cars are more realistic, tracks are faster and with the digital track sets, things are possible now that were once just hobbyist fantasy. Lets get straight into it and start racing!
If you have never raced a slot car before, you may be wondering what you need to get up and racing. It's easy. Simply pick a set and go! A set will come with everything you need, the slot cars, the track and the controllers. One thing you do need to think about is the amount of space you have available to set up the track.
If space is an option, you may want to look into the new digital tracks. Standard analog tracks have one car per lane; they have been like this for the last fifty years. So if you wanted to race with four people, this is going to be a four-lane track and take up a lot of space. You will generally need an area of 14 feet by 8 feet, plus spare room to walk around it. This is probably more than most people have available at home.
With a digital track, you can race up to eight people on a two-lane track. So you can have a challenging race on a track that is potentially 4 foot by 8 foot. You can overtake on a digital track by actually changing lanes. So you can pass into your competitor's lane and then back into yours. This makes for a much more realistic racing experience.
If space is not a problem, then you will most likely want to go with the classic analog racing set. The reason for this is that there is just so much more choice. The analog slot car has been around for a very long time and if you think you will enjoy tinkering with a slot car, then analog is the way to go. If you are not the tinkering type and just want to look at the incredibly realistic designs, then analog is going to be the more affordable option.
Digital is more expensive, so if the track is mainly for tiny racers and you anticipate plenty of collisions, then an analog slot car set is going to be best. They are much more durable and can have less go wrong. There is always the option of upgrading to digital if the new racers really take to the hobby.
